Emily Giroux – Canada’s Masters Research Student of the Year 2019
On Friday March 8, Emily Giroux picked up the Master’s Student Researcher of the Year Award at the University of British Columbia in honour of her magnificent contribution to our community. Receiving this prestigious award comes just three months after Emily travelled to Ottawa to accept the Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation.
Emily joined the team at SCIO as an intern in 2018 and was presented with a mission to identify key advocacy priorities for the Ontario SCI Alliance. By planning and implementing a consensus survey, Emily helped the Alliance shape strategic priorities which would best serve our community.
Our Senior Manager of Public Policy and Government Relations, Peter Athanasopoulos, commented: “At SCIO we believe that aligning the lived experience of people with spinal cord injuries with the expertise of service providers, researchers and policy makers is a recipe for achieving the greatest results in services and supports for Ontarians. The work Emily is doing for our community is playing a pivotal role in pulling together these various parties to create a connected mindset.”
“Emily is a fantastic mentor. She has inspired other Master’s students to join the SCI community. We are so grateful to Emily for everything she has done.”
