Kingston celebrates a vibrant community
On a cold night in a beautiful room full of warmth we celebrated connections in our Kingston community. Clients, donors, volunteers, staff, and our community and corporate partners gathered on November 28 at the Renaissance Event Venue to honour some of the people who make our Kingston community so powerful. SCIO’s Director of Client Services, Sheila Casemore brought greetings from the Board of Directors and CEO Dr. Stuart Howe, and introduced the evening’s MC Erika Schmutz. Erika talked about the positive and motivational impact her SCIO peer support volunteer had on her when she was first injured, leading to her becoming a wheelchair rugby bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.
Our inspiring keynote speaker, former SCIO client and travel and disability consultant Drew Cumpson, told his compelling story of recovery over years in hospital and his belief in appreciating every aspect of life, no matter what your ability or disability. SCIO Regional Services Co-ordinator Bryce Donald then took the stage to introduce our outstanding award winners:
- 2018 Kingston Family Volunteer of the Year, Tamara Van Grunsven
- 2018 Kingston Health Care Professional of the Year, Dr. Sussan Askari
- 2018 Kingston Community Volunteer of the Year, Rachel Holthof
- 2018 Kingston Volunteer of the Year, David Baldwin
- 2018 Award of Appreciation: Bergeron Clifford LLP, accepted by Chris Clifford
SCIO Senior Manager of Government Relations and Public Policy Peter Athanasopoulos closed the evening with a few words on the deep connections that make such a meaningful and lasting difference in our lives, and the need to nurture those connections. He expressed SCIO’s great thanks to the generous sponsors who made this event possible:
- Bergeron Clifford
- Eureka Solutions
- Berg Access & Mobility
- Active Orthopedic

- and our valued provincial sponsors Coloplast, Hollister and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
