Kingston: The Place to Be This Summer!

Bring on the hot and hazy days of summer, friends and fun! Thanks to some very generous support, that is exactly what has been going on in Kingston this summer.

On Thursday July 28th, Kingston Peer Program hosted a barbecue – our first in-person event since February 2022. Nearly 200 people came out to celebrate being together at last! Held at Kingston’s lovely Lake Ontario Park, volunteers, mentors, SCIO staff, healthcare professionals and clients enjoyed an evening of conversation, music and tasty treats.

It was a fabulous opportunity to extend wishes for an adventure-filled retirement to Dr. Karen Smith who has been a long-time friend of SCIO. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the kind support of Bergeron|Clifford Injury Lawyers who proudly support the SCIO Peer Program in both Kingston and Ottawa. And thank you to Andrea Andrecyk for being the “hostess with the mostest”!

But those folks in Kingston couldn’t stop with just one summer celebration this year – bid welcome to our newest SCIO “fun”draiser, the SCIO Enhancing Independence Golf Classic! Once again, our friends at Bergeron|Clifford stepped up to help build this great new event.

We also made many new friends for SCIO including one very special person – Mr. Richard Powers. Together, Richard and Bergeron|Clifford made an incredibly generous donation of a SoloRider Golf Cart which enables a mobility-impaired individual to play golf without having to transfer from cart to chair to play. The cart will be housed at the Colonnade Golf & Country Club where members of the community can book it for use. What a fabulous gift to the community of Kingston. Many thanks to both Richard Powers and Smriti Shekhar at Bergeron|Clifford who both worked hard to rally sponsors for the event.  A huge shout out to Bryce Donald who almost single-handedly filled a shotgun start with golfers.

The Enhancing Independence Golf Classic which took place August 11th on the beautiful greens at Colonnade raised $22, 915 for vital safety and mobility equipment for people in need with spinal cord injuries. Please see the list below of our sponsors and prize donors – a heartfelt thank you to all for your generosity. A special thanks to Steve, from Spearhead Brewery who spent the afternoon sharing his icy cold wares with us. We are also grateful for the media promotion of the event – thanks to Geoff Falcon at Rogers Sports and Media.

In keeping with our Ottawa golf tournament back in July, we had another tie for the first-place position. Both coming in at 12 under par in a best ball scramble, were the Fore Horsemen and Team Branco. Through an intense round of rock, paper, scissors, it was determined that the Fore Horsemen would take home the trophy for 2022. An honourable mention to our most honest team, the Fabulous Five! Kudos to Mr. Steve Hagerman who won $5000 on our hole-in-one contest and many thanks for his generous donation to SCIO from his winnings and to Greg Gray for matching his gift.

Our last thanks are extended to the fabulous volunteers who worked to make these events huge successes. It is true – volunteers make the world go round!
