Opinion: E-scooters in Toronto

With the Ontario government’s five-year e-scooter pilot program, launched January 1, 2020, come some very real concerns about safety and accessibility on city streets. In a letter to Janet Lo, Senior Project Manager,Transportation Services, City of Toronto, SCIO’s Director of Advocacy Peter Athanasopoulos writes: “Unlicensed, untrained, uninsured people travelling at high speed on almost-silent e-scooters in public places, including sidewalks, endanger the public and especially people with disabilities. Ontarians with disabilities and others will be exposed to the danger of serious personal injuries or worse.”
