Service Dogs at SCIO
At our recent Peer Connections Event, SCIO had the honour of meeting Orla and Lee; two adorable service dogs! We were so fortunate to have hosted these service dogs and their handler, special guest Laura Johnson, from Lions Foundation of Canada Guide Dogs who came into discuss the foundation’s services.
Assistance dogs can be immensely helpful for those living with a spinal cord injury or other physical disabilities. These service dogs can help handlers retrieve objects, open and close appliances and open and close doors. The dogs are also trained to bark or activate an alarm system when help is required. Orla and Lee demonstrated their impressive skills to the event’s participants and received lots of praise, attention and bacon in return.
The Lions Foundation of Canada Guide Dogs provides service dogs at no cost to the handler. To learn more about their services, how to apply for a dog and how their dogs can increase your independence visit their website.
