Vehicle Modification

Mobility Means Freedom

One of the great personal freedoms in life is having a vehicle to go where you want, when you want. A spinal cord injury does not have to spell the end of that freedom and independence with so many creative solutions from manufacturers around the world and local installers here to get you back on the road.

Modified vehicles

Getting in and out of your vehicle can be made possible with lowered floor van conversions and integrated ramps, hydraulic lifts, or specialized transfer and turning seats. There is a full range of products available to help make driving possible again including electronic driving controls. Whether you need fully powered systems or a combination of manual and power operation, a vehicle modification dealer can help you find the best solution for your abilities.  Minivans are the most common lowered floor vehicles due to their size and ease of access. But there are other options including modifications for pick‐up trucks and full-sized vans.

What is possible?

Health care specialists including Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS®) are available to help. An occupational therapist trained in vehicle modifications can help assess your situation, including reviewing your mobility, the wheelchair you use and whether you will drive or be a passenger. Driver rehabilitation training services approved by the Ministry of Transportation will ensure that you feel comfortable and confident to operate your modified vehicle.  Some people get inspired learning what others have achieved by reading stories or watching videos online. Peer Support groups are also a great way to learn from others how an adapted vehicle can be made to suit your lifestyle.

Costs

Everyone’s situation is different, but there are resources available to help pay for the cost of modifications including worker or private insurance coverage. There are also charitable foundations that support this need including the Ontario March of Dimes Home and Vehicle Modification Program. Of course, modified vehicles can also be financed through loans the same way that unmodified vehicles are.
