About SCIO

Serving the community for over 75 years

SCIO is Ontario’s largest community of experts in spinal cord injury, serving people with all mobility disabilities.

We are the primary source of services for individuals and families journeying from injury to achieving their personal life goals. All of our work is grounded in shared lived experiences and strengthened through relevant research, strategic advocacy, and accessible education.

Together we connect, support, and empower our community to thrive, bringing visibility and information about living with a disability to the forefront.

Mission, Vision & Values

At the heart of SCIO is a commitment to empowering individuals impacted by spinal cord injuries to achieve their fullest potential as part of a community that is knowledgeable, inclusive and recognizes their strengths.

Our History

At Spinal Cord Injury Ontario (SCIO), we’re more than an organization; we’re a community of support for individuals living with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities. Our journey began in 1945, inspired by the resilience and vision of World War II veterans who refused to accept institutionalization as their fate.

This spirit of determination and the desire for a better, more inclusive life for people with spinal cord injuries have guided us ever since. Today, SCIO stands as Ontario’s most comprehensive resource for individuals navigating the challenges and opportunities of living with mobility disabilities.
