Brain Computer Interface
Invitation to participate in UHN research study, CAN-PRIME.
If you have tetraplegia and are interested in exploring new ways of controlling your computer, you may qualify for a research study that uses a Brain-computer interface (BCI) system implanted by surgical robot at Toronto Western Hospital. The implant records your brain signals and sends them to a computer, which translates them into commands so you can control a cursor or other devices using thought alone.
Who is eligible to participate:
- Canadians who are at least 19 years old
- Have tetraplegia (limited function in all 4 limbs) due to spinal chord injury and are at least 1 year post- injury (without improvement)
- Have a consistent and reliable caregiver
Regrettably, we can’t accept individuals who:
- Have an active implanted device (pacemaker, deep brain stimulator (DBS), etc.)
- Have a history of seizures
- Require MRIs for an ongoing medical condition
What is involved:
During the study, the R1 Robot will be used to surgically place the N1 Implant in a region of the brain that controls movement intention. Participants will be asked to use the N1 Implant and N1 User App to control a computer and provide feedback about the system. The study includes 9 in-person hospital visits over ~12 months, as well as weekly at-home BCI training sessions to control a computer or other assistive device.
Compensation For Participants
• $150 will be provided for completing the screening visit.
• Once enrolled, participants will receive additional compensation for each subsequent study visit.
• All travel-related expenses to and from the Toronto hospital will be fully reimbursed for every visit.

Virtual rehabilitation
A qualitative semi-structured interview study is conducted to explore the perspectives, needs, and essential characteristics of the individuals with SCI.
