[TORONTO] – The time to build a more accessible future is now. That’s the message from Spinal Cord Injury Ontario as it embarks on the 2nd annual Rolling Through Barriers campaign set to launch September 1, 2021.
The registered Canadian charity, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, is committed to working to increase the health, mobility and options of people living with spinal cord injury and other disabilities across Ontario.
The Rolling Through Barriers campaign is a celebration of what’s possible when Canadians come together to break down barriers and dispel myths about life with a disability.
“Last summer, as we were struggling through the first 6 months of the pandemic, the spotlight shone brightly on not only the many pre‐existing barriers to full inclusion that our community members face every day, but on new barriers being created in government responses to the pandemic,” says Dr. Stuart Howe, CEO of Spinal Cord Injury Ontario.
In Canada, 1 in 5 people live with a disability, which equates to more than 6 million people and 1.8 million in Ontario alone.
Spinal Cord Injury Ontario invites those with lived experience to share their stories online and help raise money for the programs, services and advocacy initiatives that are transformational and lifesaving. Participants are encouraged to set up a virtual profile and Fundraising Page, where they can Join the Movement and collect donations.
“Now that the world has had a glimpse into some of what our community deals with, it is time to provide a more detailed impression and clarify the misconceptions that are so often held about the barriers that people with disabilities face.”
