Peer support programs are based on the belief that individuals will most often look to their peers and friends for help when they experience worries or problems. Nobody understands the world of spinal cord injury like someone who has had to navigate it themselves. It is a unique experience that most family and friends cannot relate to. Having someone who has been there and can answer the questions you have is vital to your recovery.
Why do you want to become a Peer Support Volunteer? You know your experience is valid and valuable. You may also know that, in helping others, you often end up helping yourself.
The volunteer experience is rewarding. From it, you can gain a sense of purpose and satisfaction. You can offer information, support and guidance to a person faced with challenges similar to those you have overcome.
