5 Ways to Practice Self-Care This Month
When was the last time you took to unwind or do something that brings you joy?
The age-old saying, “Stop and Smell the Roses,” isn’t just a mantra on chalkboards and in inspirational texts – there is a lot of truth and purpose behind the saying. Self-care, and the act of appreciating and recognizing goodness in our lives, helps better our moods and spirit. Even with life’s challenges, it’s important to pause, reflect, take time for yourself and find sources of happiness.
With a focus on self-care and self-love this month, here are 5 Ways You Can Practice Self-Care, starting today:
Get Some Sunshine:
With temperatures warming in many parts of Ontario, sunshine is also making its welcomed return. And we could all use some more Vitamin D. Whether you get out into the community, sit on a patio or balcony, or even read a book by a sunny window, the sun brightens moods. It replenishes our serotonin, which is known to help a person feel happier, calm and focused. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
Spend Time Away From the Screen:
Power down the computer, shut off the TV and put away your phone. If you’re working remotely, be mindful of your screen time and how it can affect your mood. Instead, take some time to read a book that’s been sitting on your bookshelf, try writing in a journal, or just be still and allow your mind to pause.
Be Social:
Humans are social beings, and not just online. After a difficult couple of years, there are many networking events, group talks, and in-person activities that have returned. If this is your first time in group settings again, it may seem overwhelming at first. Start by meeting a friend, or visit your local library or community centre to see what is on their schedule.
Be Active:
How do you stay active? From group sports to individual activities, there are many accessible activities available in your community. Why not try something you’ve never done, like swimming or sailing? If you prefer to exercise in a small group, accessible pickleball is very popular, and weight training can be done safely with a trained professional. Always check with your doctor before starting any new or strenuous activity.
Treat Yourself:
Everyone deserves a treat – you decide what it is! Perhaps a nice dinner, a new jacket, a vacation, or even a day off. Don’t forget to treat yourself – it’s important to bring yourself joy, too!
